What is a Martingale Collar? The primary distinction between a martingale collar and a standard collar is that the martingale tightens as the dog pulls. The purpose is not to choke the dog, but to prevent it from escaping the collar. Many dogs have heads that are the same size or smaller than their necks. With a regular collar, when a dog backs up, it may be able to slip out. The martingale collar tightens in such situations, preventing the dog from slipping its head through.

Proper Sizing Our martingale collars are measured at full extension. When measuring your dog's neck, please ensure you press down through the fur to get an accurate reading. Many people fail to do this, leading them to over-measure and order a size too large.

When the collar is on your dog, the metal rings at the ends should not touch. The nylon portion attached to the D-ring should be extended. If you pull on the D-ring and the collar does not tighten, then the collar is too large and must be adjusted smaller.

Great for Training A martingale collar also tightens if the dog is pulling on a leash. This allows you to provide gentle corrections, to which the dog will respond much better than with a regular collar.

Reflective Effectiveness Many collars use a thin line of reflective stitching or tape that can peel off when wet. Our martingale collar features 2mm wide bands of reflective stitching around both edges, providing a large reflective surface area.
